Through the generations the people of Lubuk Beringin in the Bungo district of Jambi province have acted as stewards of their local ecosystem, for example by protecting the flow and cleanliness of the Batang Buat river. But the story does not finish there.
In 2009 Lubuk Beringin became the first village to get Hutan Desa status, which gave its people the right to stewardship of a tract of forest. Four other nearby villages are also now part of the agreement. This extends the protected zone of the forest. The team at KBR 68H report about how this has benefitted the people of the area in a number of economic and environmental ways.
