Facial Recognition System concept.

The government department responsible for Australia's welfare agency says it supports a national facial verification database.

The Department of Human Services says the scheme, which would see government agencies share images of people, would help vulnerable people.

Yesterday, the Victorian government announced it would be providing state drivers licence data to the Commonwealth to crackdown on identity fraud.

The federal government says people facing domestic violence or natural disasters might be unable to leave home with identifying documents, affecting service access.
