Most workers doing app-based jobs are migrants

The proportion of people using the gig economy to find work is higher than some previous estimates. (AAP)

About seven per cent of working Australians are finding jobs through the so called gig economy, signing up to more than 100 digital platforms to make a living. Academic research now shows this proportion of the workforce is higher than previously thought. A wide variety of work is now being undertaken through digital platforms, including web design, writing, computer programming, skilled trades work, odd jobs, deliveries and driving as well as caring work. The Queensland University of Technology has surveyed 14,000 Australians for a Victorian government inquiry into the on-demand workforce about their participation in the gig economy. The Inquiry will report to the state government later this year.
