Every year Australian celebrates National Volunteer Week (NVW) from May the 20th to the 26th. This year the theme is "Making a world of difference". During the National Volunteer Week, SBS Karen Program spoke to a former Karen refugee Naw E'mer Paw, who is a volunteer at Multilink in Brisbane. E'mer Paw San Shwe, the Inspirational Women Award 2012 recipient explained why she loves to be a volunteer.
There are 6 million volunteers nationwide. Many volunteers are from multicultural background including Karen people. This annual celebration is to say thank you to 6 million Australians for their tireless efforts and free contribution to Australian society. The week-long celebration includes breakfasts, morning and afternoon teas, luncheons, award ceremonies, picnics, forums, and training sessions.
