Scientists say Australia is facing an extinction crisis, call on PM to strong laws

More than 240 scientists have added their names to an open letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison calling for stronger environment laws.

The scientists say Australia is facing an extinction crisis primarily because of habitat destruction and they warn another 17 animals could become extinct over the next 20 years.

One of the signatories is the Director of the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science at the University of Queensland, Professor James Watson.

Professor Watson says successive governments, state and federal, have failed to tackle habitat loss caused by land-clearing.
