String jumps of Hellmut Stern. Parts 3 and 4

Hellmut Stern in 2009 Source: SBS

Hellmut Stern was born in 1928 in Berlin, where his father was employed as a singing teacher, and his mother was a pianist. Helmut began playing violin at the age of nine. Less than two weeks after Kristallnacht the Stern family left Berlin and made their way to China. The family lived out the war in Harbin which was at that time a thriving Russian enclave. Hellmut went to Russian school and also learned Chinese and Japanese. In 1949 with great difficulties the family immigrated from Communist China to Israel, where Helmut played as a bar pianist at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. There he met his famous namesake Isaac Stern who helped him to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv . Later he moved to US and played violin in many well-known orchestras .And then his life came to full circuit when he returned back to Berlin and for 34 years performed with the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra as the first violinist, orchestra board and concertmaster with all the leading conductors of his time, but mainly with Herbert von Karajan. We met Hellmut Stern in his apartment in Berlin in 2009 at the time of the celebrations, marking 10th anniversary of fall of the Berlin Wall. Against this backdrop the stories of his life and journeys became even more captivating and later translated into series of five biographical tales, illustrated by musical excerpts from recordings of Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Herbert von Karajan.(Part 3-4: China-Jerusalem)
