More than 60 supermarket chains and major companies across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific have signed a pact to drastically reduce plastic pollution in Australia, New Zealand and the pacific by 2025.

Highlights:

  • A report from the Minderoo foundation says just 20 firms produce 55 per cent of global plastic waste. Australia was worst when it comes to single-use plastics per capita. accounting for 59 kilos of waste.

  • Supermarket chains in Australia and NZ have pledged to eliminate unnecessary and problematic plastic packaging and make sure 100 per cent of plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

  • NSW and WA race to ban single-use plastics bags, plates, cups, straws and cutlery from next year.
