Will the government set new migration targets in next week's Budget?

Australia’s migration numbers have plunged during the pandemic, with numbers falling into negative levels for the first time since World War Two. It’s a massive blow to the economy, with the skills crisis and slow population growth likely to impact the post-COVID recovery for years to come. But experts say it’s not only the economy that will suffer but also the rich cultural fabric of Australian society.

Highlights

  • Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show at its peak, 2 million people were arriving in the country each month.
  • Treasury is forecasting numbers won't return to pre-pandemic levels for another four years.
  • Australia's migration program will depend on the nation's vaccination program and a safe quarantine system.
