Jamestown in South Australia is set to become home to the world’s biggest battery. Underscoring South Australia’s commitment to renewable energy, the 100 megawatt (MW)/129 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery being built by Elon Musk’s Tesla is expected to become operational from 1 December 2017. The role of the battery is to provide some stored electricity into the grid ensuring an uninterrupted power supply to the state. Heralded as a historic milestone, battery storage is only part of the long-term solution in securing affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy. Dr Dhamu Pongiyannan talks to the eminent energy advocate Mr Mark Henley from Uniting Communities, South Australia.
