Neelam Devi lost $5,000 along with two gold chains and 10 gold bangles.
An Australia based NRI woman was robbed of her purse by a bike-borne assailant when she was passing through a busy street in Amritsar in the northern Indian state of Punjab on Saturday.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 pm when Neelam Devi, along with her mother-in-law Amarjit Kaur was walking towards the Putlighar chowk- which is almost always packed with pedestrians and traffic.
Ms Devi’s father-in-law Davinder Singh told the police that Neelam and his wife were walking towards the chowk when an unidentified youth on a bike came from behind and fled away with his daughter-in-law’s purse.
He said the purse contained $5,000 along with two gold chains and 10 gold bangles.
A case has been registered against the accused and the police are probing the matter.
At least 327 cases of robbery were reported in the city, many involving the NRIs in 2018 of which 117 cases have been cracked, reported The Tribune.
