Police in the Northern Territory say they're investigating claims that juvenile detention officers encouraged teenage inmates to fight each other for junk food and to eat bird faeces.

Police in the Northern Territory say they're investigating claims that juvenile detention officers encouraged teenage inmates to fight each other for junk food and to eat bird faeces.

The allegations were made by a 15-year-old former inmate of the Don Dale juvenile detention centre at a youth justice forum held in Darwin on Monday.

The assistant Police Commissioner, Jeanette Kerr says inquiries have been taking place since May.

"What I can confirm is that  we are investigating maltreatment of a young person at the Don Dale detention centre. There is currently one person we are still speaking to where where we think there is potential avenues for further inquiry. At this point, we have not identified any criminal offences. But investigations are ongoing and we are endeavouring to speak to the full range of witnesses that we will need to speak to."
