COVID-19 Update: Pressure mounts on Victoria’s healthcare system, Queensland to impose restrictions on parts of Tasmania

This is your update on the Coronavirus in Australia for 16 October 2021.

  •  Victoria reports 1,993 local cases
  • NSW records lowest daily tally in more than two months
  • ACT extends NSW postcodes which are no longer under travel restrictions
  • Southern Tasmania enters first full day of lockdown

Victoria

Victoria recorded 1,993 local COVID-19 cases and seven deaths.

Victoria’s COVID-19 Commander, Jeroen Weimar, says a 15-year-old was among those who died, and had other health conditions along with COVID-19. 

The state is now managing more than 21,600 active cases. Today’s deaths bring Victoria's toll during the current outbreak to 138.

There are 163 in ICU with 160 of them on a ventilator.

More than 88.5 per cent of those over 16 have had their first dose of the vaccine, and 64.3 per cent have had second dose

New South Wales 

NSW has recorded 319 locally acquired cases, and two deaths. There were 66,311 tests undertaken in the reporting period.

The state is now rapidly approaching the 80 per cent double vaccination target, which will trigger further easing of restrictions. NSW Health revealed 78.8 per cent of people aged 16 and over have now had two doses of a vaccine.

  • ACT reported 20 locally acquired cases, which is the lowest tally in 18 days.
  • Tasmania records no new COVID-19 case. Premier Peter Gutwein urges those in lockdown to follow the rules.
  • Queensland imposes restrictions for anyone who is travelling from certain parts of Tasmania, from 1am Sunday 17 October.
