For the first time in Australian cinemas, audiences will be able to see on the big screen, direct from the UK, live theatre productions, starring some of Britain\'s most respected stage performers.

NT Live is a new initiative by the UK\'s National Theatre to broadcast live performances of plays onto cinema screens around the world. The pilot season launches with NT Director Nicholas Hytner's production of PHÈDRE by Jean Racine, in a version by Ted Hughes, with Oscar winner Helen Mirren (The Queen) in the title role. The cast also includes Dominic Cooper (The Duchess) and Margaret Tyzack (Match Point). The series will be captured live in high definition and screened at cinemas through local distributors across Australia.

Four plays will be presented in the pilot season of this unique series, launching with the highly-anticipated production of PHÈDRE. Of her performance in PHÈDRE, Helen Mirren says, “I am very happy to have the opportunity to play Phèdre - a rich, complex and demanding role – and to be part of NT Live, this grand new adventure for the National Theatre.”

The program will provide international audiences with the chance to see the UK's greatest theatre concurrently as it is performed there. “The NT Live events are designed to bring what we do on the stages of the National to a far greater number of people than we would ever be able to reach otherwise,” says Nicholas Hytner. “Through high definition broadcasts, we have the technology at our disposal to present our productions beyond the four walls of the National, to reach passionate theatre-goers all over the world, and to do it really well.”

An initiative of London's most prestigious National Theatre, NT Live is dedicated to the high definition broadcast of live performances. PHÈDRE will be performed live in London, filmed in high definition and presented in selected Australian cinemas, concurrently with the London season.

The NT Live program will be in addition to the upcoming 2009/2010 Metropolitan Opera series that will begin in mid-October.

The NT Live events are distributed outside the U.K. through New York-based distributor, BY EXPERIENCE, and through local film distributor, SHARMILL FILMS.

NT Live is funded in partnership with Arts Council England and NESTA.
