Jane Campion is leading Australia\'s charge at the Cannes Film Festival, with her new film Bright Star selected for official competition against a field of equally heavyweight directors.

\"\" The Australian-British co-production is an English period drama about the romance between poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne, and the film will compete for the Palme d\'Or against new releases from Quentin Tarantino, Lars von Trier, Johnnie To, Ken Loach, Ang Lee, Michael Haneke, Pedro Almodovar and Alain Resnais.

Bright Star is the first Australian film iselected for Cannes competition since Baz Luhrmann\'s Moulin Rouge in 2001.

\"\" Australia\'s other great hope is director Warwick Thornton (picured above, with his producer Kath Shelper and Bright Star producer Jan Chapman), whose indigenous love story Samson and Delilah will compete in the Un Certain Regard sidebar of the festival. Thornton\'s film about two teens in Alice Springs was a favourite at the Adelaide Film Festival in February, and will be opening the Message Sticks Film Festival on May 7.

The last Australian films to screen in Un Certain Regard were Ten Canoes, 2:37 and Suburban Mayhem in 2006.

In another local connection, late Australian actor Heath Ledger\'s final film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, will screen out of competition.
