The Melbourne International Film Festival has snagged the Australian premiere of Wayne Blair's The Sapphires, and will screen it on Opening Night, August 2.
The Sapphires is a 60's-set tale of the rise of an indigenous all-girl singing troupe, which went on entertainment tours of duty to Vietnam. Tony Briggs' screenplay is based on his mother's own experiences in the group.
It will make its world premiere in an out of competition special screening at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday May 19.
