Children of Sarajevo world-premiered in the Cannes Un Certain Regard section, where it won a Special Distinction of the Jury. Later, the film opened the Sarajevo Film Festival, and went on to numerous festivals, winning awards at Pesaro and Herceg Novi. It also had successful theatrical distribution in its home country.

The selection committee of the Association of Filmmakers of Bosnia and Herzegovina had to choose between Begić's film and Nedžad Begović's Cell Phone Movie, winner of best documentary at Sarajevo 2011.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is the only country in former Yugoslavia to have won a foreign language Oscar, for Danis Tanović's No Man's Land, which won the award in 2002.
