Surprise nominees include Nicole Kidman, who won a supporting actress nod for her role in the steamy, much-derided potboiler "The Paperboy"; Javier Bardem, whose turn as a James Bond villain in "Skyfall" beat out Leonardo DiCaprio in "Django Unchained"; and the cast of "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," which landed an ensemble nod over the higher-profile likes of "The Master," "Django Unchained" and "Zero Dark Thirty."
Kidman received a second SAG nomination for her role in the television movie "Hemingway & Gellhorn."
Other nominees include the expected Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field for "Lincoln," Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway for "Les Miserables," Alan Arkin for "Argo" and Helen Hunt for "The Sessions."
Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" and David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook" were the most nominated films, each with three individual nods and one ensemble nomination. "Les Miserables" received three, while "The Sessions," "Argo" and "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" received two.
The key ensemble category, considered the SAG Awards' de facto best-picture race, includes "Argo," "Les Miserables," "Lincoln," "Silver Linings Playbook" and a surprise entry, "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." A couple of potentially strong contenders, "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Django Unchained," were unveiled very late in the voting period.
Notably missing from the list of nominees: Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams for "The Master," Paul Thomas Anderson's critically-loved but thorny drama about the relationship between a cult leader (Hoffman) and an unstable drifter (Phoenix).
The well-regarded "Beasts of the Southern Wild," whose nine-year-old star Quvenzhane Wallis could have been a contender in the best actress category, was ruled ineligible under SAG rules.
In the television categories, "Modern Family" was the most nominated show with four, followed by "30 Rock," which landed three nods in its final season.
The dramas "Downton Abbey" and "Homeland" and the HBO movie "Game Change" also received three nods.
The ensemble nominees for TV drama were "Homeland," "Downton Abbey," "Boardwalk Empire," "Breaking Bad" and "Mad Men." TV comedies honored for their ensembles were "30 Rock," "Modern Family," "The Big Bang Theory," "Glee," "Nurse Jackie" and "The Office."
Individual TV nominees ranged from vets like Bryan Cranston in "Breaking Bad," Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey in "30 Rock," Jon Hamm in "Mad Men" and Julianna Margulies in "The Good Wife" to newcomers like Jeff Daniels in "The Newsroom" and Claire Danes and Damian Lewis in "Homeland."
With her nomination for "Nurse Jackie," Edie Falco is now tied with David Hyde Pierce for the most SAG nominations ever, 19.
While the entire membership of SAG, which numbers more than 100,000, is eligible to vote for the SAG Awards, nominations are made by two nominating committees, one for television and one for film, each consisting of 2,100 randomly-chosen members.
