Danish director Lars von Trier's new film, Nymphomaniac, starts on a cold winter's evening, when an old charming bachelor Seligman (Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård) finds Joe (French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg) beaten up in an alley - and here she is (photo), on the first still released from the set, after shooting was completed. "My only sin, I believe, is that I always demanded more of the sunset," Joe confesses to Seligman.
Having already licensed the film for most of Europe (UK/Ireland: Artificial Eye, Germany/Austria: Concorde, France: Les Films du Losange), Australia, Brazil and Hong Kong, Denmark's TrustNordisk continues preselling von Trier's new feature at the European Film Market in Berlin (February 7-15).
Principal photography for the Louise Vesth production for Zentropa Entertainments in co-production with Bettina Brokemper for Zentropa International Köln, Marianne Slot for Slot Machine (Paris) and Bert Hamelinck for Caviar (Brussels), on an 11-week schedule last summer in North Rhein-Westphalia, Germany, and Flanders, Belgium.
When Seligman has found Joe, he brings her home to his flat where he cares for her wounds. A self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, she recounts the lushy branched-out and multifaceted story of her life - eight chapters of her journey from birth to the age of 50 - for two versions of the film, one hardcore, the other softer and less explicit.
The cast also includes Stacy Martin, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Connie Nielsen, Mia Goth, Udo Kier, Jean-Marc Barr and Caroline Goodall. Premiliminary release date in Denmark is May 30, through Nordisk Film Distribution.
