Life Of Pi was the leader in a year when honours where evenly distributed at the Academy Awards, winning four Oscars including Best Director for Ang Lee, Cinematography for Claudio Miranda, Music – Original Score for Michael Danna and Visual Effects for Bill Westenhofer, Guillaume Rocheron, Erik-Jan De Boer and Donald R. Elliott.

Michael Haneke's Amour won the Foreign Language Film Oscar. Haneke gave credit for the honor to the film's stars: "Thank you ... to my main actors, Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant, because without them I would not be standing here," the director said as he accepted the award.

Producers Grant Heslov, Ben Affleck and George Clooney collected Best Picture for Argo, directed by Affleck. Affleck, who previously won an Oscar for co-writing Good Will Hunting (1997), said, “I never thought I'd be back here. I'm back because of so many people who extended their help to me when there was no benefit to them. It doesn't matter that you get knocked down in life, all that matters is you've got to get up.” Argo also won Film Editing for William Goldenberg and Adapted Screenplay for Chris Terrio.

British actor Daniel Day-Lewis continued his triumphal awards march for Lincoln, duly winning Actor in a Leading Role, in a category where there was no doubt who would be the winner. Jennifer Lawrence won Actress in a Leading Role for Silver Linings Playbook. Austrian Christoph Waltz added the Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar to his bulging awards kitty for his role in Django Unchained. Anne Hathaway took home the Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar for Les Misérables.
