Nicole Kidman has been spotted in the NSW outback filming for the thriller Strangerland.

The actress was seen in Broken Hill filming scenes at an old storage yard on Thursday, according to News Corp Australia.

A photo published online shows a brunette Kidman in a three-quarter sleeve cream top and holding a missing persons sign.

Kidman previously spent two weeks filming in the tiny NSW country town of Canowindra, before moving on to the mining city.

She posted a photo of the Canowindra welcome sign on Facebook, showing her appreciation for the rural area.

"Absolutely loved Canowindra ... A beautiful town with beautiful people! Nic xx" Kidman wrote on Facebook.

It's understood Kidman stayed locally at a secret location during her stay in Canowindra.

Last month, she was snapped on the set and posing with locals while filming in Western Sydney.

Strangerland co-stars fellow Aussie Hugo Weaving and Joseph Fiennes.

The story follows a married couple, Kidman and Fiennes, whose teenage children go missing.

The producer of the film, Macdara Kelleher, told News Corp Australia it was a dream come true having Kidman in the film as it was her first time using her accent in an Australian film since she made Dead Calm in 1989.

"It's amazing, we couldn't ask for anyone better in terms of your ideal casting," he said."If you're making an Australian movie and it has Nicole in it, it's pretty special."

Strangerland is set for release next year.
