LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - No stranger to films set on his home turf, Massachusetts native Casey Affleck is attached to star and produce a film about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
Based on the book "Boston Strong" by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, the spec was written by The Fighter scribes Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy and follows the massive manhunt to apprehend the two men believed to be responsible for the bombings, as well as examining the city's reaction following the events.
Affleck is producing along with his partner, John Ridley, and Dorothy Aufiero.
Affleck's attachment should help in jump-starting the project as the producers get it ready to take out to studios in the next week. Tamasy and Johnson were still undecided on whether to make it a movie or TV series when they optioned the rights to the book in July 2013. EOne Television came last April on to develop it as a miniseries, but those plans fell apart earlier this summer.
Affleck, whose pics with Boston roots include Good Will Hunting, Gone Baby Gone and the upcoming Disney pic T" has a handful of pics set to bow in the next year -- including Christopher Nolan's Interstellar and John Hillcoat's Triple Nine. He is repped by WME and Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca, Fischer, Gilbert-Luire, Stiffelman and Cook.
