Mamie Gummer is Meryl Streep's oldest daughter, with sculptor Don Gummer, and the pair play a mother and daughter in Jonathan Demme's new film Ricki and the Flash

Streep is a musician who struggles to become a part of her now grown-up children's lives. Diablo Cody (Juno) wrote the screenplay for the film.

Gummer spoke to Variety about what it was like to co-star with her Mum.

Growing up, was it assumed you would be an actor?

"It wasn't. I always loved doing it from an early age, but it was important to me and my parents that I be presented with other options and explore other avenues. But nothing else stuck quite the same way."

What appealed to you about Ricki and the Flash?

"It was just that wonderful and wicked blend of dark humor and real heart. I had the biggest grin on my face as I was reading it, and then it made me cry. And that's why we do what we do."

Is it intimidating to work with the likes of Meryl Streep, even if you're related?

"Oh no, she's not intimidating to me. (Laughs) Maybe I'm one of five people on the planet that wouldn't be struck in that way, the rest being the other members of my family. But I'm intimidated by everyone else!"

Have you ever asked your mum for advice?

"I think the valuable advice is about how to maintain balance in life. Acting is a hard thing to really talk about or teach. So there were no tricks or secrets she's in possession of she could bestow on me."

"Mum you're here. It's like the 80s all over again."
