Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

What's it about?
This cult comedy, a surprise hit at the time of its release, follows two slacker airheads (Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter) about to fail their history class, but who are given the chance to take an epic trip through time, where they'll get to cross paths with Napoleon, Beethoven, Socrates, Billy the Kid and Abraham Lincoln. They'll learn that Caesar is not just the name of a salad dressing, and many more excellent things, which will help them ace their final exam. 

 

Peggy Sue Got Married

What's it about?
Kathleen Turner earned a Best Actress Oscar nom for her amazing performance as Peggy Sue, a forty-something mother who attends her 25-year high school reunion after separating from her cheating husband, Charlie (Nicolas Cage). When she faints at the reunion, she wakes up in 1960… and is given the chance to change her fate. There are so many great one-liners in this charming comedy by Francis Ford Coppola, which also features cameos from future stars Helen Hunt and Jim Carrey.

The Golden Child

What's it about?
Fresh from his Beverly Hills Cop success, Eddie Murphy starred in this funny and entertaining madcap fantasy adventure, playing Chandler Jarrell, a detective specializing in missing children. He is told he is the 'Chosen One' and sent on a madcap mission to save the 'Golden Child', a youth with mystical powers who's been abducted by an evil cult in Tibet.

 

Brewster's Millions

What's it about?
In one of Richard Pryor's iconic roles, he plays a minor-league baseball player learns that he's about to inherit $300 million from a great-uncle he's never met. The catch? First, he has to spend $30 million in 30 days, which is actually a lot harder than you might imagine.

The Warriors

What's it about?
A bonafide cult classic, Walter Hill's brings an element of Greek tragedy to the story of the gangs of New York in the late '70s. A charismatic gang leader summons all the various local street gangs in the Bronx, and pitches his idea of a brokered truce, to enable them to terrorise the citizens as one. Not everyone welcomes the idea, and the deadly consequences set off a renewed turf war.

What's it about?
Keanu Reeves has a decidedly un-excellent adventure in this disturbing high school drama, which is based on an actual event. When a group of teenagers discover that one of their friends has killed his girlfriend, they are faced with a moral dilemma, struggling to choose between calling the police or helping their friend.

Weird Science

What's it about?
In a bid to boost their popularity at school, two nerds attempt to create the perfect virtual woman by hacking into a secret government program. Out of this experiment comes Lisa, a goddess who seems to have endless powers. A pure product of its time, complete with hair perms, floppy disks and '80s synthesizers, Weird Science is the ultimate teenage boy's fantasy.

What's it about?
Two years after National Lampoon's Vacation, Chevy Chase brought his unique 'suave goofball' schtick to the role of investigative reporter Fletch. While working undercover on a drug dealing ring in Venice Beach, Fletch is approached by wealthy cancer victim with an odd request: He wants Fletch's help to murder him, so that his family can get his life insurance money. But Fletch smells a rat, and starts digging further into the story.

Red Dawn

What's it about?
In this Cold War-era classic, director John Milius imagines a world in which things haven't quite turned out in favour of the United States: the 'Commies' are on the march globally, and America is the only one still standing, but not for long. A group of high school students, played by young familiar faces like Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey and Charlie Sheen, decide to team together to fight against the Soviets.
