'Suicide Squad' director David Ayer let his excitement get the better of him at the film's New York premiere.

Suicide Squad director David Ayer echoed one audience member's cry of "Fuck Marvel!" during his introductory remarks at the DC film's New York premiere.

He later apologised on Twitter.

"Sorry about getting caught up in the moment," he wrote Monday night. "Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers."

Earlier in the night, Ayer described the Warner Bros. film to Variety as an "insane cocktail party." Watch the video below.

Suicide Squad, starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie, opens Thursday.
