Costing twice its projected $25 million budget and ranking as one of cinema's most famous fiascos, Terry Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen nevertheless counts as a masterpiece of fantasy and surrealism. It follows a 17th century aristocrat, his henchmen and a little girl as they attempt to save a town from defeat by the Turks. They embark on a fantastic journey which sees them be swallowed by a giant sea-monster, take a trip to the moon, dance with Venus and escape from the Grim Reaper.

What's it about?
Inspired by the 1962 French film La Jetée, Gilliam's time travel classic offers a visually stunning and thought-provoking exploration of madness and technology. Bruce Willis stars as a convict from the bleak future, sent back in time to prevent a terrorist organisation from releasing a virus that wipes out 99 percent of earth’s population. When he is accidentally sent back too far into the past, his bizarre story gets him arrested and locked up in a mental institution. It's there he meets a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe), and the insane son of a famous virus expert (Brad Pitt, in his Oscar-nominated performance).

Directors: Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam
Starring: Terry Gilliam, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin
What's it about?
Gilliam, a cartoonist by trade, fell in with the Monty Python troupe by bringing his surreal cut-out animations to link the sketches from their 1969 BBC show Flying Circus, before becoming a screenwriter then later co-directing The Holy Grail. In The Meaning of Life, a series of seven musical comic sketches that marks a return of the Monty Python to their original TV series, Gilliam directs the movie opener, The Crimson Permanent Assurance, a short film that sees a band of repressed elderly accountants rebel against capitalism and become pirates.
