Melé is a bar singer in Bamako, Mali. As she and her husband Chakra go through the trauma of a marriage break-up, a trial is held in the courtyard of the house they share with other families. African civil society representatives have initiated proceedings against the world's financial institutions (the World Bank and the IMF) whom they blame for Africa's woes. The witnesses, ranging from unemployed workers to writers, attack the legal representatives of the financial institutions who in turn defend their organisations. Amidst the pleas and the testimonies, life goes on in the courtyard: marriage, birth, and tragedy.
