Simon, a bookish boy, grows up in a loving working class family in Sweden. Against his parents' will, he pursues an education normally reserved for young men of academic heritage and meets Isak, the son of a wealthy Jewish bookseller who has fled the German persecutions. As WWII rages all over Europe, the boys and their families' lives will interconnect in unexpected ways.
