Eagle Daniel Kerr retires from AFL

West Coast midfielder Daniel Kerr says he decided to retire because he knew his dodgy knees couldn't handle another year at the elite level.

Star West Coast midfielder Daniel Kerr has announced his AFL retirement despite having a year to run on his contract.

Kerr told teammates of his intention to quit just days after the club's season ended in late August.

But he only made the announcement official on Tuesday once he reached a settlement with the club regarding the final year of his contract.

The 30-year-old was restricted to just 10 games in 2013 due to ongoing issues with both of his knees.

The 220-game veteran knew his body wouldn't be able to handle the rigours of another AFL season.

"I've been lucky to be able to wake up every day and do what I love, but lately it has become harder to get my body to carry out my mind's instructions," Kerr said.

"It was hard to come to terms with the fact that I probably wasn't going to be able to play to the standard that I wanted, but I recognise that my best football is past me and it's time to step aside to let the new generation through.

"I've had the time of my life at this football club and I've made friends that I'll keep until the end of my days."

Kerr joins Adam Selwood, Mark Nicoski, Andrew Embley, Ashton Hams and Brad Dick as other Eagles who retired this year.

West Coast also lost coach John Worsfold, with Adam Simpson named as his replacement.
