What will it mean for global stability if America and Russia pull out of the INF, a cold war-era weapons treaty?

For over 30 years, The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) has been one of the most significant arms deals in the world - with the USA and Russia prohibited from possessing, producing and testing ground-launched nuclear cruise missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometres. 

The deal, which proved a linchpin in ending the Cold War, could come to an abrupt end in six months, with the USA threatening to abandon the agreement after it alleged Russia violated the pact.

But with the future of the pact under threat, could its death lead to an expedited global arms race?
