Debt help closer for vocational students

Help for students who were rorted into debts from vocational education providers is closer, after draft laws passed the first hurdle of parliament.

Australians who were rorted into huge debts from vocational education providers are one step closer to having their charges dissolved.

The now scrapped VET FEE-HELP program saw vocational education providers race to sign vulnerable students up to loans, leading to 6000 complaints to the ombudsman from those who were left with debts despite withdrawing from courses.

"They received no service, they certainly received no certificate and they received no education," Labor MP Joanne Ryan told the lower house as the bill passed on Wednesday.
