Greens to block govt's housing changes

The Greens party room has voted to oppose the federal government's proposed housing affordability measures.

A Turnbull government plan to allow first-home buyers to save for a deposit through their superannuation faces possible defeat after the Greens party room voted to oppose it.

The draft laws set up a First Home Super Saver Scheme and also allow older Australians to contribute the proceeds of the sale of their family home to their super.

A Greens spokesman says the changes would add to existing pressure in the housing market and ignore more obvious solutions such as removing negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions.
