Indonesia's under-developed region

Experts on eastern Indonesia have gathered today to discuss the region's lagging economic development and the need for poverty alleviation.

The workshop is being hosted by the Australian National University and chaired by Dr Budy Resosudarmo, and will discuss more effective strategies for environmental and resource management.

Dr Resosudarmo says that development in the region is frustrated by small populations, lack of funding, mountainous terrain, and long distances to other economic centres.

He says more specific information needs to be developed in order to effectively solve the problem.

"Let's sit down and try to contribute all information and make a relatively systematic document, so that we can develop more programs that will specifically answer some of the problems."
