Is the new Toshiba tablet ad racist?

Toshiba has come under fire for their latest tablet advertisement depicting an Asian caricature with 'slanty eyes'.

But Señor, the Croation ad agency that came up with the advertisement, said it was a tribute to the Japanese electronics company and was meant to evoke "positive emotions".

"Toshiba is the only Japanese tablet brand currently present on Croatian market," wrote Señor in a blog post. "Why not remind people of this fact and evoke all the positive emotions Croatians have about top Japanese technology."

While the ad is only being used in Croatia, some online users have argued that the 'squinty-eyed' Asian caricature is racist and offensive.

Earlier this year, Japanese airliner Nippon Air (ANA) landed in hot water for racially stereotyping Caucasians in a TV commercial aimed at promoting its beefed up schedule of international flights from Tokyo's Haneda airport.

The ad caused a stir among English-language users of social media in Japan, and has since been replaced.
