NSW's top cop Mick Fuller says detective sergeant John Breda is making a miraculous recovery after being stabbed by child sex offender Nick Newman.
It has only been four days since NSW senior detective John Breda was brutally stabbed, but he is already laughing about the work waiting for him at home.
The state's police commissioner Mick Fuller said the 45-year-old's condition was improving daily and he has started rehab after being seriously injured while trying to arrest a wanted child sex offender at a Sydney pub on Australia Day.
"It is a miracle," Mr Fuller told reporters outside St Vincent's Hospital on Tuesday.
"He is a lucky man, but in saying that he was incredibly fit, he was incredibly strong mentally, and the doctors put that down to one of the key reasons that he survived such a horrific attack."
The detective was stabbed during a violent confrontation with Nick Newman, 33, in the Maroubra Junction Hotel's beer garden in Sydney's east.
Newman stabbed Det Sgt Breda twice - in the chest and in the stomach - before being fatally shot by two other officers on Friday afternoon.
The senior detective was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a critical condition where he underwent emergency surgery.
Mr Fuller said the senior detective was so upbeat about his recovery that the pair even shared a laugh about "all the wonderful things" he has to look forward to during his recovery.
"It was just really about how through rehab it will be a wonderful time to get him painting and doing a few things around the house," Mr Fuller said.
"We both hate painting."
Mr Fuller said he is looking forward to Det Sgt Breda's return to the police force.
Medical staff will start Mr Breda's rehab by transferring him from a bed to a chair in an attempt to increase his mobility.
"John, as humble as ever, asked me to thank all those who have put out their thoughts and prayers for John and his family, which is indicative of the sort of guy that John is," Mr Fuller said.
"I'm sure people across NSW and Australia will be pleased to hear the progress John has made in such a short amount of time."
