Local mayors to lead homelessness summit

Capital city lord mayors have committed to hosting a national homelessness summit in the coming months.

A national homelessness summit will be held in the next few months, with the mayors of Australia's capital cities determined to tackle an affordable housing crisis confronting the country.

The city leaders have made the commitment after taking part in a two-day summit with Assistant Housing Minister Luke Howarth.

Mr Howarth copped backlash earlier this week after saying he wanted to put a "positive spin" on homelessness figures, arguing Australia's more than 116,000 homeless people represented just 0.5 per cent of the population.
