PASOK founding member and MP Evangelos Yannopoulos has died after a long battle with cancer.
Mr Yannopoulos was known for his combative style and his sense of justice.
As a young man he fought in the National Resistance against the occupying Nazi forces and after liberation he practiced law and entered politics.
He was one of the original group that together with Andreas Papandreou founded the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), and served as a minister for many years.
Through his tenacity and insistence, the contribution of those who fought in the National Resistance was officially recognised by the state.
He wasn’t a man to shy away from a “fight” in parliament and his frankness landed him in trouble many times.
Prime Minister Kostas Simitis delivered the eulogy and representatives of all parties attended his funeral.
