Liberal strategist Mark Textor tells SBS he 'went too far' likening an Indonesian official to a porn star, but denies he was forced into making an apology.

"I'm a famous sledger on Twitter but I think I went too far this time and I unreservedly apologise."

Despite speculation he had faced pressure to apologise, Mr Textor said he had made the decision on his own.

"Polling and politics teaches you to listen," he told SBS.

"I looked at what was happening and I thought no, sometimes you just need to calm down and eat humble pie, so that's what I've done."

There was some confusion over who Mr Textor was describing in the controversial tweet, but he told SBS it was not aimed at anyone specifically.

"I wasn't talking about anyone in particular. I saw a number of spokespeople having a go at Australian spokespeople and I thought 'oh, I'll have a sledge back'."

"But on reflection it wasn't a good idea."

Asked how he could make such a blunder despite working in the communications many years, he said it had been a rare slip.

"No one's perfect. I think people appreciate someone with a bit of character who's not a beige person," he said.

"Twenty-five years in politics, one or two mistakes, this is certainly one of them. And I apologise."
