Refugee advocates say no lessons have been learned, a year on from the death of Iranian asylum seeker Reza Berati.

The 23-year old was killed at the Australian-run detention centre on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea, following a riot involving local civilians.

Kon Karapanagiotidis is from the Melbourne-based Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

Mr Karapanagiotidis says Mr Berati's death was a result of Australia's mandatory indefinite detention policies.

He's told Abby Dinham a year since that fatal incident, conditions have worsened at the centre.
