Indonesia's president-elect Joko Widodo has called for the country to unify after a deeply divisive election that ended with his rival quitting in controversy.

Indonesia's electoral commission last night announced Jakarta's popular governor had won with 53 per cent - or more than 70 million votes - in the hard-fought poll.

Rival candidate Prabowo Subianto condemned the election process and withdrew from the election yesterday.

Amid fears of rioting, Mr Joko called for an end to the partisanship that has split Indonesia during his acceptance speech.
