Surf's up for veterans as they catch a wave of wellness

A veteran's group in Bondi is using one of the area's most popular past times to help members achieve better health.

The program - "Vet's Go Surfing" - offered free surfing lessons to about 30 military personnel on Bondi Beach.

Army warrant officer Brett Mellish told SBS he picked up the sport a few years ago.

"It gives you something else to work your mind on to get you away from any troubles you're having," he said.

"You always feel a lot more rejuvenated mentally when you come out of the surf even though you might be physically exhausted.

“... It's excellent to get out there and clear your mind.”

The two year old program is part of Veteran's Health Week, devoted to improve both the physical and mental health of veterans and their families.

North Bondi RSL secretary James Isbell said the sport was therapeutic.

"Particularly for those away, the family at home are doing it really tough,” he said.

“Obviously, if mum or dad are away for several months at a time, then there's a lot of weight on those left at home.”
