Terror watch focus of Vic police drones

Police drones equipped with night vision will monitor major Melbourne events from as early as next month.

Police drones will be scanning the skies at major events in Melbourne as early as next month as part of a new specialist unit.

The drones, to be managed by Police Air Wing, are able to run 24/7 and will be equipped with night vision to monitor high-risk areas throughout the night.

Victoria Police will have the added benefit of using the drones in a range of operational duties across the state, boosting police resources, Inspector Craig Shepherd said.

"It will also assist when police attend emergency situations with the ability to fly a drone in to provide advice to someone in a tricky situation or supply first aid equipment or water," he said.

Police hope operate up to 50 drones within the next 12 months.
