There’s been some criticism levelled at Abbott that making Bishop speaker was a captain’s call that spectacularly backfired. But this isn't the first time the Prime Minister has been accused of making decisions without consulting the rest of the party.

Reintroducing knights and dames, an expensive paid parental leave system, rejecting advice on forestry policy; there's been plenty of moves that have been less than popular with his backbench.
