The light aircraft crashed near Mareeba Airport, west of Cairns.

Two people have been killed in a light plane crash west of Cairns.

Police and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have launched an investigation after the aircraft went down in a cornfield near Mareeba Airport about 11.15am on Saturday.

Both men – the pilot, a 73-year-old man from Cooktown and his passenger, a 63-year-old man from Stuart, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

ATSB later released a statement confirming the aircraft was built by the Angel Aircraft Corporation.

It is registered to Anju Azul Aviation Pty Ltd, which has a registered address in Cooktown.
