An unborn baby who died following a crash in Victoria is among four people who have lost their lives on Australia's roads during the Easter long weekend.

An unborn baby is among four people who have lost their lives on Australia's roads this Easter long weekend.

A car turning on to Victoria's Midland Highway in Bannockburn crashed into the side of a car being driven by a 31-year-old pregnant woman about 4pm on Saturday.

The woman, from Ballarat North, was seriously injured and airlifted to hospital where her 31-week-old unborn child died.

The death is the first on Victoria's roads over the Easter period and the fourth nationally.

Another man died in a crash on the Stuart Highway near Pine Creek in the Northern Territory on Saturday.

There were also fatalities in Western Australia on Friday and in NSW on Thursday.

So far, the Easter road toll is on track to be the lowest in years.

There were 22 fatalities for the whole weekend last year and double digit figures the years before.

However, while police are thankful that road toll numbers have dropped, they note speeding is still an issue.

More than 4000 drivers in NSW have been clocked speeding so far this long weekend, while in Queensland that figure is closer to 9000.

NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command's Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said speeding was one of the biggest killers on roads.

"The speed limits are in place for a reason - to save lives," he said.

Police across the country have been running state-based operations during the Easter long weekend targeting drink and drug driving, speeding, mobile-phone use and other forms of dangerous driving.

The Easter road toll period runs until midnight on Monday.
