US boy receives guard of honour after father dies in line of duty

Heartwarming footage has emerged of police officers performing a guard of honour for a five-year-old on his first day back at school after his father died in the line of duty.

More than 70 police officers and SWAT members have escorted five-year-old Dakota Pitts to school after his father died in the line of duty in the US state of Indiana.

His dad, Rob Pitts, was a 16-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department and was killed in a shootout between police and a suspect on May 4, according to the department.

Footage shows Dakota wearing his dad's badge around his neck as police line the street for the five-year-old as he returned to school.
