Former lawyer breaks from traditional role for Ukraine's armed forces

Born into a military family, Mariia dreamt of becoming a soldier in Ukraine's military but instead grew up to become a lawyer. After giving birth to her daughter in 2018, she made the decision to join the army, working her way up to the position of platoon commander. Opportunities for women in the Ukrainian army opened up when tensions erupted in the Donbas region between Ukraine and Russia in 2014. Since then over 30,000 women have served in Ukraine's armed forces.
