They say a picture tells a thousand words, but for Indigenous Australians one picture can tell thousands of stories. These stories connect communities to our lands and cultures which have sustained us for more than 1500 generations.

This summer is all about art at NITV, and to celebrate the art and culture of Indigenous Australia, on the first day of the season we launch the Summer Art Series.

This new series is all about bold, beautiful and black art. Each month we will feature a new artist and give you a personal insight into the minds and worlds of these featured artists.

We start the Summer Art Series with the simply stunning and inspiring art of Wayne Quilliam.

When you think about Indigenous photography Wayne Quillianm is one artist that stands out.

Wayne is regarded by many as a leading Indigenous photographer in the country and we are fortunate enough to showcase his compelling and emotive works.

If you ever wondered what goes through Wayne's mind when he takes his amazing photos, then peruse the captions he provided for our Wayne Quilliam Summer Art Series Gallery

The images are born of the earth and the spirits that inhabit it, the influence from a benevolent higher power is embedded within the artwork at every level.

While creating these artworks Wayne contemplates creation, belonging and love, exploring his humanity and what it means to be an Aboriginal man, why he was chosen to create these images, and what is the purpose.

"The images are born of the earth and the spirits that inhabit it, the influence from a benevolent higher power is embedded within the artwork at every level."

He finds an unexplainable and compelling need to immerse himself in his passion, to tell a story, to explain his vision, to highlight the beauty of our earth and the role we play.

"The images are born of the earth and the spirits that inhabit it, the influence from a benevolent higher power is embedded within the artwork at every level."

The creation of this work has been a unique journey; each piece has a story, an experience that is as intriguing as the artwork itself.  The images are born of the earth and the spirits that inhabit it, the influence from a benevolent higher power is embedded within the artwork at every level.

This summer is all about art at NITV, and to celebrate the art and culture of Indigenous Australia, we have launched the Summer Art Series. Every day of Summer, we will share a new image that is all about bold, beautiful and black art.
