Leonard Smith moved to Perth from Yulga Jinna, 130 kilometres north of Meekatharra, for schooling but appears to have suffered permanent damage from the fight.

His aunty, Michelle Riley, says she is too distraught to speak about her nephew’s recovery.

"The knock on his head has done a lot of damage to him physically. On his right side he hasn't got much movement at all on his right side, that's in his leg and arm. He's saying a few words but in his mind he is just so confused. He's like a little kid again," said Ms Riley.

The full extent of permanent damage is still being assessed, but the toll of travelling down to Perth from Yulga Jinna for Leonard's recovery is weighing heavily on the family.

"It's a long process that we're going to have to go through with them and that. It’s just a waiting game at the moment, everything is hard, you know, thinking of someone losing a child is just so difficult," said Ms Riley.

The family believes the person who hit Leonard Smith has been taken into custody.
