In 1952, the keys to Windsor Castle were handed to Elizabeth Windsor. At 26 years old she was the 40th monarch to take over the Castle. But she was not just a Queen. She’d been married to Philip for 5 years and was mother to Charles and Anne. They made Windsor their family home. The private apartments they took over were Victorian and dark. Elizabeth set about a full revamp. Philip grew increasingly frustrated. He had no place in State affairs that kept his wife busy and little role in private as Windsor was run by hundreds of staff.
