If there is one thing that could rival my insane love for Asian Pop it would have to be my love for Asian Dramas. One of my favourite things to do is to lock myself in my room and binge-watch entire TV shows: true story. My dear brother even dubbed me the ‘Drama Queen’ and that probably has nothing to do with my enthusiasm for Asian Dramas.
In the last decade we have seen a number of Idols take on acting roles, some performances successful and others downright cringe worthy. I thought I’d share my Top 5 favourite Dramas with Idols.
Considering I go through dramas like I’m getting paid a million dollars to watch an episode it was hard to narrow it down one five. If it’s in my Top Five it means I have re-watched it, there is more than one memorable scene and the idols performances didn’t make me wince in embarrassment.
DREAM HIGH (2011)
IDOLS: IU, Suzy (Miss A), Eun Jung (T-ara), JYP, Wooyoung and Taecyeon (2PM)
I learned a few things from this drama: that I should never hide my talent, always be inspiring and that dropping a flower pot from the top of a building is not the answer. Besides the life lessons, Dream High also released one of the best soundtracks. Check out their cover of Girls’ Generation’s “Genie”.
HANA YORI DANGO (2005)
IDOL: Arashi’s Jun Matsumoto
How do you get an audience to love a seriously mean guy who issues out his infamous 'humiliate and bully the receiver' red card? Easy, you cast Jun Matsumoto as Domyouji Tsukasa. Only Jun could tell a girl she’s ugly and still have her pining over him
REPLY 1997 (2012)
IDOLS: Seo In Guk, Eunji (APink), Hoya (Infinite), Eun Jiwon (Sechs Kies)
If there is one Idol Drama you need to watch Reply 1997 is the one. It takes us back to the 90s where K-Pop was on the rise and extreme fan culture emerged thanks to K-Pop legends H.O.T and Sechs Kies. If you think you're a fangirl, think again. No one does it quite like Eunji!
IDOLS: Vic Zhou (F4), Barbie Hsu
Intense. That’s the only way I know how to describe Mars. The love story of shy Han Qi Luo and playboy Chen Ling isn’t your typical rainbows and butterflies fairytale but its serious nature is the reason why it is in my Top Five. Not to mention, it has one of the best theme songs EVER!
ROOFTOP PRINCE (2012)
IDOLS: Yoochun (JYJ)
Loved everything about Rooftop Prince, the plot, the characters – EVERYTHING. I was laughing, crying and getting really angry. Literally. Sometimes when I watch a drama I have an imaginary scale in my head that measures my ‘frustration’ levels and with Rooftop Prince let’s just say it was off the Richter. The first episode was done so well that I wasn’t sure the rest of the drama could live up to its strong start but every episode just kept getting better.
FULL HOUSE (2004)
Rain and the bear song. That is all.
So PopAsians, is your favourite idol drama in my Top Five list?
